Bumi is a master of earthbending and an excellent strategist. His eccentric personality leads people to underestimate him, but underneath it all, he is a very wise man.
When Kya suggested tracking Jinora through the Spirit World, Bumi scoffed at her idea. He explained that tracking spirits by spiritual activity would be useless.
What is Bumi?
Despite his small size, Bumi is a brave and confident commander. Having grown up as the only nonbender in his family, Bumi often adopts a wild and determined personality to prove that he can do anything a bender can. He is also very caring and loyal to those he cares about.
Later, when he stood at the gateway on Air Temple Island that doubled as a finish line for the air scooter race between Korra, Ikki, and Meelo, Bumi tried to reassure his younger sister by reminding her that he had once won a rock-throwing contest against an earthbender. Bumi then teased Tenzin over his potential replacement by Chief Unalaq as Korra’s spiritual mentor.
In addition, Bumi helped Korra and her siblings fight off a dark spirit that was attacking them. He and his siblings were able to calm the spirit by using a power they learned from their father. He also helped them rescue a bison rustler from being captured by the Red Lotus.
What is his bending ability?
Unlike his siblings who were all benders from birth, Bumi was a nonbender. However, following the reopening of the spirit portals, he gained the ability to airbend. Although he was initially unable to master the art, he Bumi138 became proficient enough to retake Omashu under the solar eclipse all on his own.
He later surprised everyone at the dinner table by using his newfound bending abilities to stop Meelo from throwing a plate at Bolin. He then offered to bend a boulder at the earthbender but he refused.
During the episode "The Avatar and the Unbendable" the lion turtle chants a Buddhist prayer that is also used by Bumi when energybending. The prayer is called "Na Mu A Me Tuou Fu Shi Ne". This prayer translates to "no self is true unless the mind and heart are united". This also reflects the posture that Bumi takes when energybending.
